Volcanic ash impacts European travel

Over the past few days, airport closures and flight cancellations across Europe due to the volcanic ash from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano have disrupted travel to, from, and throughout the region, causing hundreds of flight delays and cancellations for travellers. The situation is expected to continue impacting flights and airport operations in the coming days.

Due to these conditions, Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) has experienced a significant increase in both the number of calls received and the length of most calls at many service locations, including its Emergency Service Centres (ESCs). Additionally, our airline partners have experienced an increase in call volume, as they coordinate re-accommodation of affected travellers using limited capacity on available flights.

To most quickly and effectively service distressed travellers; CWT’s contingency plans have been implemented and include the following:

  • Due to the increase in number of calls being received working hours at several CWT Service Centres in Asia Pacific have been extended.  However, we are still experiencing extremely high call volumes and longer hold times and seek our customers’ understanding.
  • ESC staffing is being closely monitored and has been increased with additional resources throughout the network.

Please be assured that all CWT counsellors are focused on servicing distressed travellers as quickly and effectively as possible. To enable us to do so, we ask that:

  • Travellers who have non-imminent travel needs should defer from contacting their designated servicing location until after the impact from the incident has passed.
  • Because of the dynamic nature of this incident, travellers scheduled to travel to Europe in the near future may wish to review their plans based on current and ongoing travel impact and delay travel to impacted destinations in Europe for the next week.
  • For information regarding airport closures, we ask that travellers consult www.eurocontrol.int

CWT continues to monitor the situation and its impact on call activity. We will continue to adjust operations to best service all travellers and provide updates as appropriate.
